Much of the area burned is dense Redwood Forests over 400 years old. An odd string of lightning storms from the Pacific during a short period of record heat set off the events. This is how nature cleans itself up—and unfortunately, humans have taken up residency in this magical stretch of mountains between the Silicon Valley and Pacific Ocean.

As of this morning, the Joby Aviation Compound on Woodpecker Ridge appears safe—or at least still there. Many, many Joby employees either live on the compound or nearby. I may have to put a few up, as I have two spare bedrooms. The massive quarry operation is likely sheltered from the fires, but there is dry brush and large trailers and tents.

Meanwhile, I am safe in Marina, but the smoke has now settled down to right outside the door. The off-shore breeze here will help, but not so for those inland where the smoke heads east across the country
