Hiking the Angeles National Forest

Hiking the Angeles National Forest

I found myself cruising down historic Euclid Avenue in search of a German auto repair shop with good reviews so that I can avoid the dealership next time my aging BMW needs service. I found it early on, but was compelled to keep driving north through Upland, as the closer one gets to the mountains, the more grand, noble and historic the homes get along this tree-lined corridor. This street goes back close to the Old Spanish Trail of 1771.

By the time I reached San Antonio Heights, I was heading right to Mt. Baldy Road. What the heck, let’s give the old bimmer a little workout on one of the most totally twisty roads that I know.

It was fun, but I respected all the cyclists on the road and toned it down.

At about 6,000 feet I pulled over to do some hiking. I took one shot out of the car and one on the trail. Then the battery died in my little Sony. All the backup batteries were at home.

Lesson learned – plan for the spontaneous. Whatever – I hiked a few miles, and did it just for the experience of being at 6,000 feet above the LA smog. I’ll be back!
