I endured the relentless East Coast heat + humidity to pickup provisions for the holiday and beyond, with little intent to do anything outdoors until it cools down. I may be in for a time.
Recently a new market opened nearby (Harris Teeter). It exceeds the mediocre offerings us locals had to put up with for the last few decades. Also in the still-under-construction shopping center was MOD Pizza.
As I left the house without eating, I decided on lunch there. MOD Pizza is one the fastest growing chains in the country. It pays its employees a “living wage.” It offers one-price “artesian” pizzas (with 30 topping options) – baked in stone ovens at 800 °F in about 3 minutes. What’s not to like?
I ordered a meat-heavy “Mad Dog” simply because I didn’t want to decide between 30 toppings. As with true Neapolitan pizza, the super-hot oven made all the difference – the crust was perfect.
Overall it was far better than anything I could make at home. Next time I will forgo the meat and get a bit more creative. My only criticism: this particular store didn’t have the beer/wine option. With a heat index of 108 °F at noon today, a cold beer (or two) would have made the experience awesome.
