I had my first real date at the Sheboygan Theater – fortunately it is the only remaining downtown theater and books amazing artists!
There was a stealthly-brief opportunity to leave my client and visit my hometown for the first time in many years. Finally I came to my senses and came in the summer!
It was too short and I leave unable to see all of those I wanted to see. Next time for sure.
Heart of the city – Fountain Park – and the old small fountain to the right bubbled out an intense minerally water for generations!
Like many Midwestern cities, Sheboygan was hit hard with manufacturing plants dying or moving. But it seems on the mend. The mighty Lake Michigan draws a large tourist crowd. Good food is everywhere and, of course, Sheboygan remains the Bratwurst Capital of the World.
The Mead Library was built decades ago when the original became too small – it sits on the site of the Hills Department Store and Piggly Wiggly!
It’s wonderful to walk around and discover what things have changed, and what remains the same. If the weather was as pleasant as it was today, I’d move back in a flash. Of course that is a safe statement, as winters here can be brutal (and the reason I left decades ago).
When I was growing up, this view would have been two large mounds of coal at the Reiss Coal Company Yards!
There’s something magical about the cities and town on the shores of the Great Lakes! It makes one feel sorry for all those folks living in land-locked places.
Oh, perhaps I should have skipped that last Brandy Old Fashioned – no matter as I am walking back to my hotel!
Clearly I discovered the ideal time to return, and my next visit will be when things, again, warm up next Spring. Part 2 of this brief journey to come in the next few days (promise).
