We have partnered with the innovative company Xometry to 3D Print our prototypes and master patterns, and even machine some of our layup molds. They developed an online system where one just uploads a 3D model file and it gives you instant pricing for any 3D printed material or CNC milling from metal or plastic.
Their pricing and rapid turnaround is remarkable. In the world of aerospace, 8-10 weeks for anything is the norm; with Xometry 3D printed parts often ship in a day.
In spite of fast turnaround and great pricing, we have to watch the budget, as no revenue will come until we have product to ship. Thus I opted to purchase our own 3D Printer, and my only regret is the limited processing window. But it is a great machine. From their website (obviously translated from Catalan).
The BCN3D Sigma is a professional FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) 3D printer able to print every object you might set your mind on with very high detail. It is characterized by its IDEX (Independent Dual Extruder) system, which allows to print without geometric limitations and offers the possibility of combining existing techniques such as multi-material, multicolor and support printing.
We’ll use it primarily for two tasks: prototype hardware such as pulleys, gears and fittings, and miniature scaling of our actual products. It prints in two colors, and one can actually purchase filament that is reinforce with carbon fiber. If only it was larger!
