St. George Island and the PGA’s Whistling Straits

Yup – too much belly, even for a old fart – but it is going down – 25 miles a few times a week will do it!

Boy, I needed a day off. In spite of past gloating, working from home can suck the life from you in ways that are unfathomable from working at work.

Conditions were perfect – receding low tide waters and a southwest breeze swept us east to St. George Island, so we decided to kayak around the entire island for the first time – likely 25 miles.

The massive Potomac River was calm, and wispy clouds filtered the August sun. I packed a few really good black forest ham and Wisconsin cheddar cheese sandwiches, and a couple of beers.  From every horizon, it was a summer weekend day to be enjoyed by all.

osprey chick

It’s hard to capture Osprey close up, as they just don’t trust us people!

The Osprey chicks are now adults, but still consider their nests home. It was fun to entice them to actually fly, as I approached their nests perched in previous safe harbors.

We managed to catch a few white perch. The winds and tides were in our favor for the entire trip. After the slow journey around the island, passing under the St. George Bridge, the tidal currents carried us gently back to Potomac Beach. I may have even dozed off a bit reclining in the kayak to a comfortable position when the fishing part became a bit boring.

Camp MerryLand

The outer tip of St. George Island – the point of no return!

Exhausted and home with the perch pan frying, we caught the last of the PGA Masters in Whistling Straits, a few miles from my home town Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This place is totally awesome!

Few know that Whistling Straits is on the site of the former Army Base Camp Haven, on the shores of the mighty Lake Michigan.

The views of the PGA Tournament were incredible! More so, because my dad took me there back when the Army conducted open house tours with live ammo fires to drones flying over the lake. But really, after the base closed, Camp Haven, aka, Whistling Straits, was the ultimate adventure destination for Cousin Jim and me as kids. It was the edge of the universe by bike, and so much cooler than chemical creek.

The moment of total peace – much like the long past carefree journeys to Camp Haven!

I’m no golf nut, but it will be fun to watch the PGA conclude tomorrow at the site of my childhood adventure land! It’s funny how connected this day’s journey is to past adventures to Camp Haven.
