Thanksgiving Alone – Not Fun!

Dinner thrown together in a half hour – not nearly like the two days my mom would put into a Thanksgiving Feast – for 35 years!

Well, another Thanksgiving disappointing family and friends – partly due to my own making. It all started with my furnace breaking down, needing a $40 part that came a day late last week. Then with two vehicles overdue for servicing, the first winter storm hit the East Coast.

To top things off, a very disappointed customer in England launching a new helicopter program for which my client is supplying critical test articles (and I am responsible for) informed us, in a not-so-polite British manner, that the parts are unusable. I am surprised that I still have that client!

In all it will require three round trips from Blacksburg to Piney Point over the last two weeks in November, with over 1800 miles of driving! It’s times like this when I really wish I just had a normal job with a 20 minute commute and could sleep in my own bed every night.

I did manage to race ahead of the storm as it hit the I-81 corridor though Southwestern Virginia. The snow was fairly intense for a time, but the cold front was lagging behind leaving the roads warm enough to prevent any accumulation. A few hours later it would be chaos.

By the time I descended the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains the snow had become a steady rain – just in time to hit bumper-to-bumper holiday traffic on I-95 between Richmond and DC.

It was like one of those holiday travel nightmares, but I wasn’t doing the holiday travel that I was supposed to be doing! Once home last night all was OK.

Today I worked on overdue chores on the house, preparing, at least, a makeshift turkey dinner. Tomorrow it’s off to DC to the BMW dealership and Saturday to the local Ford Service Department. Sunday I will likely rest, as I don’t want to fight the return holiday traffic, opting for a 2:00 a.m. drive on Monday.

I hope everyone’s holiday went a bit better than mine!
